Biography

Matthew Clarke is an abstract painter who lives and works in Warrnambool, Victoria. His painting style is a colourful and chaotic expression of his experience in life, from being lost in Melbourne to birdwatching. Matthew often works on large scale canvases, and recently also began producing painted wooden sculptures of wallabies, chess pieces and cockatoos, amongst other themes.

Matthew’s life as an artist began in 2005 when he first attended South West Tafe in Warrnambool. He graduated in 2011 and since then has exhibited in the 2021 Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW, the 2020 Paul Guest Prize at Bendigo Gallery, the 2019 Dobell Drawing Prize at National Art School, and has had over 24 solo exhibitions across Australia to date.

Matthew has completed two murals and has been selected for the Adelaide Fringe Street Explosion and Adelaide Fringe Tram in 2019, and was chosen for the Melbourne Art Trams in 2017.
